"Grandma, where were you when the great Jewish countercultural revolution happened?"
The wait is almost over. 350 years of legalised Anglo Jewry have led us to this point: the ideal realisation of jewish culture; the radical pinnacle of jewish life; the protocols of the elephants of zion. The battles are over (or at least the jewdas4 have been bailed), the venue is set – corsica studios – and the acts and actors are ready and waiting. Jewdas can now lift the lid on the cauldron of smouldering semitism that awaits: From 9-3, Corsica Studios will become the seething centre of alternative british judaism. Its labyrinth of rooms and corridors will be host a selection of the weird, the outrageous, the confusing and the downright brilliant. There night will begin with Sam Lee's rendition of anti-Semitic folk classics, reclaimed from the recesses of the dark ages accompanied by a Jew's Harp. Dave Piper will be picking up the mood with his interactive stand up comedy, challenging audiences, institutions and conventions. Jewdas favourites, Emunah will be bringing the finest world music hip hop drum & bass fusion heard since the Tower of Babel crumbled to the ground... Shekere will shake the party to its core with a half-hour frenzy of West African beats with songs as well as a thin slice of twenty-first century intercultural poetry. Loud, sweaty, crazy. 'There were no rhythms like these played when most of you guys were circumcised, although perhaps there should have been...' As a part of their european tour, Palestinian Hip hop group, Dam will mix beats with politics, bringing the struggle for equal rights to South London. Vinyl Washers will send you off into the dawn with a dizzying mix of drums, decks and trombone. Mashing up a combination of reggae, breakbeat, hip hop, drum and bass, Brazilian styles and bizarre party tunes, Vinyl Washers perform a cross between a DJ set and a live set, embellishing records with live performance and using the decks as a live instrument. The event will also be hosting the first even public incarnation of the jewdas beth din. Be prepared for radical rulings, a no holds barred question session, and on the spot conversions. Anarchic cabaret from Rachel Reid will be offered for those in the right place at the right time - Nu-cabarettiste continuing an exploration that started when a bunch of her forefathers decided to take the steps that resulted in her being born in London instead of Lvov, with songs that have kept her family bound together as rabbis, shoemakers and British Telecom archivists. And there is also the opportunity to witness the acclaimed acting of a very special guest. Take another path and discover participatory borscht-making and eating with the Borscht Virgin, taking her first tentative steps into the bloody borscht bed. Depending on where you stay or stray, you may come across the world premiere of The Metaphysics of Jewish life, a radical installation by xlternative productions of sounds visuals and bodies exploring the infinite space of jewish existence. Of course there's more; Anarchist films from Israel/Palestine, radical visuals, bagels, 'Jew or Goy' game hosted my Mistress Rivka and the Elephant Boy, chance encounters, alternative djs, Roaming Grumpy Jews, cholla fights conducted by Jeffrey Cohen, paintings from Sarah Lightman, Jewish Establishment Bingo and revolutionary tea towels from Charlie Phillips. And what about you? well all we ask is that you express yourself through dress, whoever you want to be, from Golda Meir to Yassir Arafat; Dana International to Jonathan Sex; Shylock to Philip Green. Or just come as you are... Get there early to guarantee entry. Donations on the door of £5.
