So, I'm interested in hearing other peoples opinions about Baron Cohen's new film.

I thought it is a brilliant piece of satire that comes at a highly timely moment, when lgbtq rights are under such attack. He hammered in some invaluable points, such as recognising that all the big holllywood stars are straight… also it was wonderful to see the attack of the Gay Rapist enacted in real life in the dojo… i found it really thought provoking.

I was really worried about the film for the first few minutes, especially as there were some very loud and boystrous guys in the cinema who seemed like they came to see Bruno so that they could laugh at gays, and that the film leads you in with that kind of taste in your mouth. But following that i felt like it was a very subversive film.

I love how he highlighted one thing that does unite the leaderships of Israel and Palestine – homophobia.

Ok, thats me being all stary eyed…

I really liked it. He does totally have is cake and eat it, condemning homophobia while getting laughs out of every gay steretype in the book. The audience when I saw it (not a london liberal one) started out laughing a lot, and got steadily quieter as it went on. I think its a genuinely avant garde piece of work, everyone, of all viewpoints, is left slightly unsettled. I think some of his targets aren't treated very fairly, Ron Paul, for example isn't being homophobic, anyone would walk out of an interview where the interviewer tried to have sex with them! But people like the 'conversion therapy' pastors who try ad help him to become straight deserve all they get.

In a rare trip to the cinema, I also saw this film. Found it a bit hit and miss – often it wasn't clear what/who the satirical target was and reasonable people were made to look ridiculous. I think it would have been a bit more successful if things had been done in a more subtle way; the Mexican people chairs were good, but the naked Mexican food-platter man over did it and hence the interview was terminated. I think that Baron Cohen's stuff works best as one off Ali G style interviews where a feature film requires a narrative which doesn't work. But I will still wear my Straight Dave tshirt with pride.
