Noticeboard

Living in the London area? No reason to be bored! Until we set up a better events section on our site, here are some interesting upcomming events:

The Left Right Night – 3 December

At the end of the night, who will be left right? (ba-boom)

At the end of the night, who will be left right? (ba-boom)

As the Jewish community becomes increasingly polarised along the left/right political axis, the JCC responds with a unique alternative panel discussion and cabaret night. Throwing up debates on observance, Jewish futures, Israel and economics to a panel from the entire political spectrum, this will be Question Time on steroids.

The panel includes activist Joseph Finlay, academic Keith Kahn-Harris and political comedian Andy Zaltzman, chaired by Tim Samuels.

The second part of the night will be a variety show which gives carte blanche to comedians, live artists and musicians to try their riskiest, most provocative knife-edge material.

The cabaret features comedians David Schneider, Andy Zaltzman and artists Oreet Ashery and Adi Lerer.

Only the open-minded need attend…

Produced by the Black Sheep Coalition for the JCC

Date: Thursday 3rd December
Time: 7:30pm
Venue: Aloysius Social Club, 20 Phoenix Road, London NW1 1TA
Price: £6 in advance, £8 on the door

  1. Thanks for that Robert.

Yeah, I don’t know too much about the debate surrounding Shlomo Sand’s book, but it does sound interesting. I’ve just bought myself a copy of it so maybe we can talk about it another time.

  2. hi alta, yeah I’m in town now, I think Ill get a copy with some book vouchers I got. Hope it isnt too intelectual as Im not that way inclined, he sounded like a straight talkin sort of person on the radio show. Cheers

  3. He’s got a fine line in extremely un-PC jokes has Zizek. The only man who can be ridiculously Old Skool racist standing on an academic podium and get away with it.

  4. Hmm, interesting Prozacville, what have you heard him say? I’d strongly critique how he tends towards (White-European-Male-Hetro) homogeneity rather than multiplicity – judging from the Idea of Communism conference of his earlier on this year. So I wouldn’t be too surprised by the accusation, but tell us more.

  5. I think the best way to experience Zizek’s slightly gauche un-PCness is to listen to this online lecture (I think it’s this one: http://www.bu.edu/phpbin/buniverse/videos/view/?id=141) where he relates a particularly off-colour anecdote about how he feels one should bond with one’s black brethren. Or maybe it’s another one. Doesn’t matter, this one’s great.

Speaking of the White-European-Male-Hetero devil, happened to bump into him last night in the ICA bookshop: he was wearing a t-shirt the colour and texture of a wet-dishcloth, shvitzing and gabbling to someone about something not even that person who’d asked him the question was interested in.

    You gotta love it.

  6. i wouldn’t set too much store by Shlomo Sands book, although it has been a best seller in Israel, it sets out to the debunk the myth of the Jewish people. I read a transcript of a lecture he gave last week or the week before – I can’t remember where – but he freely admits that the book is all opinion and not based on any evidence that he has evaluated. The biggest issue I have is that he refuses to acknowledge the DNA evidence which does seem to indicate that genetically Jews and the Jewish population of Israel, from where ever in the world (other than Ethiopia) have more similarities with each other than with the host communities. Since he won’t answer that question, I can’t be bothered reading his book. Enjoy though.
